Made my longest trip since my surgery this morning and it turned out to be one of my best photography days in a long time. I went to Orlando Wetlands Park in Christmas, Florida. I have been there one or two times in the past when my wife’s parents lived nearby, but have not been in about 10 years. The places has changed quite a bit and for the better. They have facilities which they had none of when I last visited. They also have a nice boardwalk and well maintained trails. The number one goal of the trip was to find the 2 one week old Sandhill Crane chicks. Within 5 minutes of getting there I was setting up near them. I hung out with them and a bunch of photographers for about an hour and a half and then decided to explore the rest of the wetlands. I got some of my best shots of Roseate Spoonbills, and nice flight shots of an Osprey with nesting material and some White Ibises. After a water and snack break at the car I decided to do another lap since I had driven so far to get there. It paid off pretty quick. I got some really nice pictures of a Great Blue Heron preying on a Greater Siren (an amphibian that is also the third longest salamander in the Western Hemisphere. They lack hindlimbs as well as a pelvic girdle, and have external gills all throughout their lives along with small lungs.) While observing that a Bald Eagle flew directly overhead and I got my best Bald Eagle photos and especially best flight shots ever. Definitely a worthwhile trip.
Beautiful photos. Did the bird finally swallow that snaky looking creature?
Thanks for sharing.
