Invasive Lizards

We saw several invasive lizards which although they aren’t great for the environment are pretty cool to see. We even think we briefly saw a monitor lizard in the wild outside of the Alligator Farm. The coolest looking lizard has to be the Peter’s Rock Agama. We spotted several of these at Robert is Here and saw a few at the Everglades Alligator farm. The males are bright orange and blue and the females have bright green spots on their head. The Peter’s Rock Agama is native to Sub Saharan Africa and was introduced to Florida in 1976.

In Everglades Park, down at Flamingo we saw several Northern Curly-tailed lizards. They are endemic to the Caribbean islands and are known for eating pretty much anything. They have been in Florida since a 1935 zoo escape.

Finally, at Biscayne National Park we found several Green Iguanas. This park is not far from Everglades National Park and we mainly travelled there so my daughters could become junior rangers at each of the 3 south Florida parks. We spotted the Green Iguanas as we pulled up to the parking area. They were introduced in the 1960s from Central or South America.
