One of the places that my kids enjoyed a lot on our trip to California was the elephant seal rookery. This is located near San Simeon and not far from Hearst Castle. It was fun to hang out watching them and see a lot of unique behaviors. There was a lot of sleeping going on, but there were also some conflicts including pushing and baring of teeth. Definitely worth a stop if visiting the southern end of the Big Sur area.
