One of the most interesting things o me about birds is the huge variety of ways that they catch food. This post has 4 separate examples of birds all from the same location, the Circle B Bar Reserve, in Lakeland, Florida. Anhingas dive under the water and stab fish with their sharp bill. They then come to the surface and flip the fish into the air and swallow it. Great Blue Herons also have very sharp bills, but they usually wade and wait in ambush for something to get close enough and then they strike and catch their prey between their bill. Sandhill Cranes mostly feed on insects so they are seen walking through the grass with their heads down picking up stuff among the weeds. This juvenile Black-crowned Night Heron is sitting on the edge of a stick waiting for something to swim close enough for him to grab. These are just a couple examples of the variety of feeding techniques birds use.
I live on a sailboat in San Pedro, California and have hundreds of Heron photos.
