One of the best wildlife viewing places we visited during our trip to California last year was the elephant seal rookery. This is on the Pacific Coast Highway just up the road from the Hearst Castle outside of San Simeon. We visited in June and there were a good number of seals present. According to a sign in the area, breeding and birthing season is December to March. The rest of the year is alternating molting and sea migration. We spent a good hour or so here and got to see a variety of activity. There were several fights, mostly as one tried to crawl over another to get to a prime resting spot. Definitely worth a visit.
