When taking sunrise or sunset pictures of a pier there are usually two main type of shots that I am looking for. Of course the first is the general view with the sun behind the pier and most of the pier filling the frame. The second type is the zoomed in version. In this case I am mostly looking to silhouette the pier and hopefully a few people on it against the sun. This usually does require you to switch lenses to capture both which I hate to do in the prime shooting times, but it makes these shots much more effective.
