One of the nice things about living in Florida for a photographer is the abundance of birds. If you spend the time watching them it is amazing the number of different ways that they catch their prey. Great Blue Herons are patient hunters. They usually enter a body of water and stand still waiting for a fish to swim by. When it does they strike lightning fast and spear the fish. Black Skimmers have one of the most unusual techniques. They have a lower jaw that is longer than the upper jaw. They fly very low (skim) just above the water with their mouth open and catch fish in their open beak.
