Wandering Albatross and Ruby-Throated Hummingbird

The photo today is from the Carnegie Natural History Museum in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In the display are a
Ruby-Throated Hummingbird and a Wandering Albatross. Seeing the two together definitely gives you a sense of scale. This is something you can use when photographing the grand landscape or a towering skyscraper. A photo just showing the Grand Canyon or Multnomah Falls do not give you any idea how big they are. However, if a person is included in that same shot it allows the viewer something to compare the scene to.

The Ruby-Throated Hummingbird is 7–9 cm (2.8–3.5 in) long and has a 8–11 cm (3.1–4.3 in) wingspan. Weight can range from 2 to 6 g (0.071 to 0.21 oz), with males averaging 3.4 g (0.12 oz) against the slightly larger female which averages 3.8 g (0.13 oz). Wikipedia

The Wandering Albatross has the largest wingspan of any living bird, averaging from 2.51–3.50 m (8.2–11.5 ft). The length of the body is about 107–135 cm (42–53 in) with females being slightly smaller than males. Adults can weigh from 5.9 to 12.7 kg (13 to 28 lb). Wikipedia
