2 Day Old Sandhill Crane

Looks like he is going to be an only child. He hatched Thursday and as of Saturday morning the other egg hadn’t hatched so I don’t think it will.

Have to keep the neighborhood clean.

A few reflections.

They fed constantly from shortly before sunrise until I left around 10:15.

It’s a lot of work for the little one to keep up with its parents.

A little grub or caterpillar going down the hatch.

They make do well even among people. This nest was about 150′ from the interstate in a small retention pond.

Yeah, I like reflection shots.

Testing out those tiny wings.

Quick nap.

This one and the 2 following were my favorite shots from this morning.

They can swim shortly after hatching.

Swimming after parents.

Reflection

I think this means “Feed Me!”

The end.

There is no way that somebody could not love these pictures of a baby Sandhill crane, but it is the interaction between the mother and baby which is so amazing. The baby quickly learns everything he needs to know from the mother. Stay close for protection, exercise a lot to strengthen your body, if you want food, ask for it but don’t get pushy. Love these shots.

Those little legs have to walk fast to keep up with mama. Just like humans and their kids who are learning to walk.

    Love ’em!
