Went out to capture my first Milky Way of the season last night with some friends. Got a few good ones but still feel like I’m learning how to shoot and process these images. While shooting we heard some coyotes howling and Barred Owls hooting at us.

The Florida Milky Way – You have to really get to darker skies and then you can start to see the Milky Way. Our eyes do not see the colors of it like the phone does.

Milky Way #2

An Experimental image. This consisted of zooming both in and out during a 15 seconds exposure. The zooming makes the stars as streaks and you can see the same trees twice in the scene.
Speaking of Barred Owl, after the Milky Way shoot I stopped by a local park to check on the baby Barred Owls. They are still hanging out in the nest although maybe for not much longer. Mom flew nearby a few times but didn’t go to the nest this morning while I was there. She did however land about 10 feet from me.

Mom was not happy when a Limpkin (a medium sized water bird) landed in the ditch below the nest. Mom landed right overhead and kept her eye on the situation.

After coming home from all this, the family and I went to a different park to do a little kayaking. We came across this Florida Softshell Turtle sitting in the grass. Not sure if it was moving to another body of water or laying eggs or what.

Great photos as always. The feather color of the owls blends in perfectly with the trees. What a nice addition to my Sunday! Thanks, Matt.
Love as always,
Big Granny
The Milky Way and Owls. What a combination, but if you take the pictures, I will look at each and every one. I have really enjoyed all of the photos of different types of owls, and especially the pictures of the baby owls, or owlets as I have learned.
Awesome as always
Baby owls are flapping their tiny wings — ready to fledge indeed. Surprised that you could take such fine photos of our galaxy.
