Ybor City – Cigars and Roosters

Ybor City is a historic district of Tampa that is famous for it’s cigar factories. It was founded in the 1880s by cigar manufacturers and was populated by thousands of immigrants, mainly from Spain, Cuba, and Italy. For the next 50 years, workers in Ybor City’s cigar factories would roll millions of cigars annually. The cigar factories have gradually closed up and the area is now known more for its nightclubs. There are still a few cigar factories around and there are several shops along the main street. 7th Avenue. I stopped in Taberno Cigars because it was directly across from Centro Ybor and because they had a sign that said please come in and take photos. I really appreciated that. I watched for a few minutes as two guys rolled several cigars. While I was watching they did not use a wrapper of any kind, but just wrapped bunch of tobacco leaves up inside a larger leaf. Another thing that is kind of symbolic of Ybor City is its chickens. There are quite a few running around especially around the main parking garage.
