Supermoon Over University of Tampa

This morning I had a chance to get out and take a few shots of the Supermoon in downtown Tampa. The supermoon is the point when the moon is closest to the earth in its orbit during the year. I used the Photographer’s Ephemeris to look for where the moon would be setting and see what the best potential shots were. The University of Tampa was in the right direction and I knew that being across the Hillsborough River at Curtis Hixon Park would give me the distance I needed to use a telephoto lens and make the moon even larger in the frame. My initial goal was to silhouette the crescent moons on the top of the minarets of the University of Tampa against the supermoon. I bracketed so I could do HDR and it also gave me latitude to get full detail in the moon. When processing the method that ended up looking the best was either converting a single file with the best exposure for the moon or a fusion of two images in Photomatix for details in the moon and foreground.
