Hillsborough Highschool Auditorium

Despite living in the Tampa area for my whole life today was my first visit to Hillsborough High School. Hillsborough High School is one of the South’s oldest high schools. Although the school probably dates closer to 1880, a room over a Franklin Street livery stable in 1885 is recognized as the first location of the school (wikipedia). My daughter Lindsay had a dance recital that was held in the auditorium today. What I saw of the school was beautiful with some classic architecture and I might have to make another trip to try to shoot a little more. I was able to capture a few handheld HDR images of the inside of the auditorium. The best feature of the auritorium is the series of stained glass windows with historical figures. There is Jonas Salk, Abraham Lincoln, General Lee, Albert Einstein, Henry Ford, Euclid, and Walt Whitman.

  1. Matt,

This auditorium is just stunning and your HDR processing is, as always, nearly perfect! I’ve been a fan of yours for a while (as you can no-doubt discern from the number of favorites I have marked from your photos on flickr). If all things go well, we’ll be moving down that way and a 1920’s bungalow somewhere in Seminole Heights is our target…which means that my kids would most likely go to HHS…which led me to these photos!

Thank you for capturing these and sharing them with the world!

  2. Dale Dietzman Class of '68

Thanks to the doggedness (pun intentional) of our Terrier School Historian, we now know that the school began in 1881 with the first class of Freshmen, and 4 years later (1885) the first graduating class of 4 students received their diplomas. One of those is in secure storage in the school vault. Ms.Mary Cuscaden (may not be spelled right) was the first Principal (in the 1880’s!).
