It was recently decided that the St Petersburg Pier will soon be demolished.  A new “pier” will replace it but eh design called “The Lens” definitely does not have the visual impact and the photographic potential of the current pier.  The current pier was only built in 1973.  It seems sad that construction can only last 40 years especially if you think buildings such as the Colisseum in Rome and the aqueducts that are almost two thousand years old.   The current pier is definitely one of the main iconic structures in St Petersburg and is one I always gravitate towards any time I am photographing the area.  I will miss the pier and hope the new design turns out better than I expect.
